From Sasol, Infosource Publishers and New Africa Education Publishing comes a fantastic Science and Technology Resource, a dictionary and CD combo especially geared towards learners and educators in science and technology. The Sasol Science and Technology Resource is a dictionary of science and technology terms covering a broad span of the sciences: biology, chemistry, engineering, physics and technology.
The book defines approximately 7500 headwords and phrases, illustrated with over 250 linked line figures, diagrams & tabular material throughout. Throughout the book, SI units and IUPAC names are used. Links are given within the definitions to other relevant words or phrases.
The CD-ROM accompanying the book, is easy to use, straightforward and makes searching for definitions that much easier. Definitions are found by searching for words or by surfing that section of the alphabet. Links to definitions of words relevant to that phrase are just a click of the mouse away. With the CD-ROM, students may 'tag & print' headwords they refer to, to incorporate this information into their work.
In the paper edition there is a section of appendices at the end of the book, in which useful items such as 'the periodic table of elements' or 'S I' units or the 'Biological classification terms',
are to be found. On the CD-ROM it is possible to reach these by their name or by appropriate links in definitions as needed.
A foreward to the book by Professor Kader Asmal, Minister of Education, South Africa
says it perfectly: " The 21st century, like its predecessor, will surely rest heavily on scientific and technological advance. The broad public must therefore be equipped to engage with the new products and processes that the scientific endeavour brings forth. The notion of a citizenry that is scientifically illiterate is meaningless if the citizenry lacks an understanding of the very words and phrases bandied about in the media and other venues for public debate."
The Sasol Science and Technology resource gives meaning to many scientific words we hear but don't quite understand, gives up to date scientific meaning to hundreds of scientific words for scholars, students and science educators. It is truly an educational resource for everyone. In Africa we hear about the African Renaissance. The first step
to that Renaissance is a culture of science and this book highlights a key factor in bringing that about: bringing basic scientific terminology within the understanding of everyone. It is a superb product and highly commended by Science in Africa. This resource should be in the hands of every learner, school teacher, library, university in the country and beyond.
The book is available at ZAR 75,00 and the CD at ZAR 315,00. The book and CD combo may be obtained for ZAR 350,00.
In its belief that this is a truly valuable resource which should be in the
hands of every learner, Science in Africa is making this book available at
a 25% discount to anyone who purchases either the book, CD, or a combination of both through Science in Africa.
