Somerset Educational announces the
NEW Simulated HIV ELISA KIT
The Microscience system, which has spread like a forest fire through South Africa as well as abroad, has now been enhanced by the addition of the new Simulated HIV ELISA KIT which has been developed in South Africa.
The simulated HIV ELISA Test Kit provides an activity based learning experience that enhances HIV/AIDS education. It focuses and engages the participants thereby reinforcing their learning about HIV/AIDS either in a classroom or workshop environment.
NGO's, Corporates and Schools can all make use of the kit for their HIV /AIDS education programmes. Biology, Life Skills, Human and Social Sciences, Economic and Management Sciences and Language Educators can all work together and integrate their approach to HIV/AIDS education.
The kit consists of:
Facilitator's manual containing information about HIV/AIDS that the facilitator can use selectively for handouts. It covers topics such as:
- the background to HIV/AIDS
- the cause of HIV/AIDS
- how the body defends itself against infection
- how one gets infected with HIV/AIDS
- how to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS
- the testing scenario and the need for Consent, Counselling and
Confidentiality
- the principle on which the ELISA test is based, to help demystify the test and build understanding and confidence in its results
- how Blood Transfusion Services test for HIV to ensure a safe supply of blood
- a play for the participants to enact
Simulated ELISA Test Kit
There are nine simulated blood samples to be tested. Each represents a patient with a specific scenario, for example, a haemophiliac, a mother-to-child transmission, a rape victim, a helper at an accident scene, a drug user, and so on. The participants predict a possible result, test the samples and compare their results to their predictions. The discussions that follow help to iron out stereotypes, destigmatise the disease and highlight the need to avoid apportioning blame. The activity deepens the participants' knowledge and understanding of HIV/AIDS and encourages them to talk about the disease and to take responsibility for informing others and combating the spread.
The equipment, reagents and step-by-step illustrated worksheet are supplied for the test.
