Dairy Herd management requires decision making on a daily basis. These decisions will have an impact on the short, medium and long term sustainability of the dairy enterprise.

This book is the first of it's kind in South Africa and is a summary of the development of a production testing program (Milk Recording Scheme) culminating in the application of data collected in this scheme and the application thereof as part of the decision making "tree" in the management of the modern South African dairy.

The book is a compilation of articles written by specialists in what was identified as topical subjects for the dairy industry and is directed at a specific group of people such as undergraduate students in veterinary and dairy science, research workers in this specific field as well as dairy herd health veterinarians and animal scientists.

The book consists of two sections. The first section has 14 chapters; all highly relevant to dairy herd management and the application of milk recording data in this area of herd management. Some of the chapters tend to be too technical for the average day-to-day application on the dairy farm, but could be used to good effect by research workers. The second section consists of a background and performance breakdown for each of the recognised dairy as well as milch-goat breeds in South Africa.

Part Two deals with the origin and genetic improvement of the breeds as well the role and services of the various dairy breed and milch goat societies. Essential contact numbers and websites are also provided.

To summarise: This book will fill a much needed gap in the present day search for more knowledge and can serve as a basic as well as a more in depth source of information for the student and researcher in this specific field of dairy science. It will certainly succeed in one of the intentions
of the editors i.e. to assist participants of The Milk Recording scheme in utilising their data to the optimum and is therefore recommended to everybody involved in the dairy business in South Africa.
