16 young designers  propose solutions to national problems

Here the winner, Jonathan Edwards of Buffalo City College in East London, is with Boitshoko Leteane of the Peninsula Technikon (in third place) with Gustav Greffarth of the University of Pretoria, the runner-up.The 16  South African design students who have been voted finalists  in
the SABS Design Achievers Awards have proposed interesting solutions to
some of  the pressing social and financial problems facing South Africa.
The proposals of  three finalists have attracted  great attention.
Jonathan  Edwards (Buffalo City College, East London) was selected
overall winner,  Gustav Greffarth (University of Pretoria) was runner-up
and Boitshoko Leteane (Peninsula Technikon) came third at a ceremony
hosted at the Pretoria Sheraton Hotel  on  National Youth Day (17 June).

Jonathan Edwards, a graphic design student from Buffalo City College in
East London, entered a project that proposed a solution for malnutrition
in  disadvantaged communities. Communities grow their own food through
the use of limited space technologies that involve the use of 1m X 1m
boxes with a grid  system in which seeds are planted.

Gustav Greffarth, of the University of Pretoria, proposed an advance
warning system that will inform motorists of  traffic congestion well
ahead of time.  His "Traffic Docta"  comprises  a portable  display
unit that advises motorists of poor traffic conditions on highways. This
information is also communicated to radio stations by means of sms
technology.

Boitshoko Leteane, a design student at  the Peninsula Technikon,
porposed  the use of animated cartoons as educational tools to spread
knowledge and help meet the requirements of  Outcomes Based Education
in Grade 1 and 2  level in schools.

The SABS Design Institute established the Design Achievers Award Scheme
in 1987.  It can be distinguished from other design awards through its
national and multidisciplinary character and the emphasis on design
entrepreneurship and leadership ability in addition to creative
excellence. A unique feature of the Design Achievers Award is its
dynamic development in which former winners played an important role.
