The competitive spirit thrives at the Sasol Scifest

Win prizes at the Sasol Scifest 2002

Sasol SciFest 2002 will offer festival goers ample opportunity to strut their stuff at several competitions for entry from both young and old!

The Sasol SciFest 2002 Schools' Quiz will give high school students the opportunity to test their scientific general knowledge. Students can enter either the Junior High School (grades 8-10) or Senior High School (grades 11 and 12) categories. Fun, exciting and informative, the School's Quiz
offers truly exciting and valuable prizes, including books for the winning school and prizes for each member of the winning teams. The top prize for each member of the winning team in the Senior Quiz is free tuition for the first year of study at Rhodes University! Please refer to page 39 of the
Sasol SciFest 2002 Official Programme for more information and the rules of play.

Sasol SciFest 2002 will also host a Primary School Quiz consisting of three special quizzes to be held at the Monument, Albany Science Museum and Albany History Museum. The quizzes are designed to make little people slow down and explore exhibitions with careful attention. Quiz sheets are available at information, and contestants must come equipped with pencils and erasers. The winners of fun prizes will be announced every evening at the Sunset Show.

The Winners Gallery is a new feature at Sasol SciFest 2002 and will host the five top exhibitions from Sasol SciFest 2001. The winners were judged according to several criteria including content, interactivity, appeal to the public and staff attitude. The 2002 Winners Gallery will feature the
University of Natal, SA Weather Service, Rhodes University Pharmacy Department, PE Technikon and the Embassy of France.

Sasol SciFest 2002 will once again host the SA Weather Photographic Competition. In 2002, World Meteorological Day will focus on reducing vulnerability to weather and climate extremes. In keeping with the theme, SA Weather is calling for photographs to illustrate extreme weather. Photographs can be entered into either the under-18 or over-18 category. The closing date is 18 March 2002 and the winners will be announced at the Sasol SciFest 2002 Sunset Show on 19 March.

The Albany Museum Makana Biodiveristy Centre (MBC) will host the Fish-to-Win quiz where contestants fish for the scarce Eastern Cape Rocky with the quiz questions on their sides! The winning team will receive Eastern Cape Rocky Posters, and a booklet and laminated poster for the
school classroom. The best teams will also receive an invitation to the Fish-to-Win quiz at the final SciFest Sunset Show on 19 March with a chance to win one of the rare Eastern Cape Rocky T-Shirts.

The Department of Water Affairs and Forestry exhibition will teach learners about the importance of water resources. Free educational resource materials are on offer and learners are given the opportunity to view fascinating projects and meet experts in various fields such as groundwater and water quality management. Attentive learners will stand the chance to win exciting prizes!

The Sasol SciFest 2002 Science Olympics will offer free fun and games designed by the Sasol SciFest Olympics Team. Contestants will be given the chance to build cable rockets, bridges, tok-tokkie tractors and Denel Paper Aeroplanes.
