Interprovincial Mathematics Olympiad results
The annual Interprovincial Mathematics Olympiad took place around
the country on the afternoon of Saturday 14 September.
Ten provinces took part: Boland, Border, Free State, Gauteng North,
Gauteng South, KZN Coast, KZN Midlands, Limpopo, Northwest and
Western Province.
The IPMO has two divisions: Junior (grades 8 and 9) and
Senior (grades 10, 11 and 12). Teams of ten are entered in each
division. With some provinces entering B and C teams as well, a
total of 17 Junior teams and 13 Senior teams took part.
The teams met in various venues across the country. At precisely 2
p.m. they all started writing an individal paper, consisting of 25
multiple-choice questions to be solved in one hour. Each paper was
out of 100, so the maximum team score on paper 1 was 1000.
The second round of the IPMO was a team paper, consisting of ten
quite tough questions to be solved, as a team, in 30 minutes. Each
question is worth 100 points for a correct answer, with no part
marks.
Two examples from the Junior team paper.
Find a 12-digit number for which every two consecutive digits
form distinct two-digit prime numbers.
Between 5 o'clock and 6 o'clock the hand s of a clock are at right
angles precisely twice. How many minutes elapse between these
times?
The maximum total team score for the second round is 1000.
The papers were marked, and the marks phoned through to
the National Organizer, Dr Peter Dankelmann, at the University of
Natal. He put the scores together and sent back an overall ranking
of the teams.
In a keenly contested event, the top three teams in the Junior
division were
Western Province (1129)
Free State (1089)
Gauteng North (1030)
In the Senior Division, the top three teams were
Gauteng South (1400)
Free State (1158)
KZN Midlands (1130)
The Interprovincial Mathematics Olympiad is a project of the South
African Mathematical Society, and is sponsored by the Actuarial
Society of South Africa.
The IPMO is part of the nationwide Mathematical Talent
Search to find teams to represent South Africa at the
Pan African and International Mathematical Olympiads.
