Expo winners at Intel International fair
Early this week two excited 17-year-olds, Nico Beyer and Ridhwaan Suliman
from Gauteng, returned victorious from the Intel International Science and
Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Cleveland, USA, where they represented South Africa.
Eskom is proud to say that the South African entries are of such a high
standard that they have been favourably judged at this international fair every
year. These South African science pioneers' projects have been awarded numerous
prizes internationally. This year was no different; Ridhwaan was awarded the
American Meteorological Society Award for his project.
The two young scientists are very proud to have been selected to represent
South Africa internationally. "I felt honoured to represent the Eskom Expo
for Young Scientists at the Intel ISEF in Cleveland. By sponsoring the Eskom
Expo for Young Scientists, Eskom has opened a door for me and allowed me to
experience another culture, and has given me the chance to exhibit my own
innovation and compete internationally as a South African..." says Ridhwaan.
Intel ISEF, the world's largest pre-college science fair, brings together
more than 1 200 of the most curious and capable young science pioneers from more
than 40 countries to share ideas, display cutting-edge science, and compete for
over U.S. $2 million in awards and scholarships as they push the boundaries of
science research into uncharted territory.
The ISEF selection process is very thorough and the students invited are the
world's future -scientists, doctors, communicators, entepreneurs, etc.
Both Ridhwaan and Nico have achieved international recognition for their
world-class projects. They won gold medals at the Eskom Expo for Young
Scientists National Finals held in Pretoria in October last year.
South Africa's young minds are energised and Eskom is proud to help unleash
Africa's bright future and the great rewards this will bring.
