SABC Education provides 30,000 free resource packs for schools
Thirty Thousand of these print packages were delivered to primary schools around the country this past month to support the 2004 programmes scheduled and have excellent feedback has been noted. The head of teacher development at the Department of Education Sesi Nexi comments, "The printed material provided by SABC Education is of the highest standard, and offers the Educator not only information about the television programmes but also ideas and inspiration for way to use the medium in their classroom. We are proud to be associated with this project and actively encourage our educators to use the media to enhance their teaching." The 2004 print packs for School TV include Teacher Books for both Foundation Phase (Grade R to 3) and Intermediate Phase (Grade 4 to 6) with information on all the programmes. In addition, a number of classroom posters are included in the packs on subjects such as my body, shapes and colours, how recycling helps us at school, and voting makes a difference. As a further innovation, SABC Education have also included a free Grade 1 reader, based on the award-winning local programme Adventures at the Waterhole. The book is aimed to support reading at Foundation Phase level, and has a unique innovation in addressing the multilingual nature of the audience: the lick and stick your language! Ingrid Bruynse, SABC's Editor for Schooling explains "We wanted to provide a reading book for learners, but needed to be able to deliver this in the language of choice. Obviously printing books in several languages proved to be very expensive - so we have instead provided all the words for book on gummed paper in 9 languages. Teachers can cut out the right language (or languages) for their class and the book becomes usable for everyone. We hope this approach is adopted by other publishers to provide more material in several languages, and very excited about the approach." Printed material has already been distributed to educators, who have to register with School TV each year to receive these resources. If you would like to register for 2005 material, please call the Educator help line on 086 222 2006. School TV is currently in its fifth year of broadcast, and is an accredited educational resource for Grade R to Grade 6 learners. The service consists of multilingual television programming to be used in the classroom, supported by extensive free print resources, an interactive website and educator trainer initiatives. School TV is broadcast every weekday on SABC 2 between 9:30 and 11: 30. School TV is produced by SABC Education in partnership with the Department of Education.
