Take 5 Fantastic Plastics competition

Take 5 presenter Aaron Moloisi encourages South Africa's grade 11 and 12 learners to enter the Fantastic Plastics Essay Competition by writing an essay about the role of plastics in our every day lives.

The competition was launched during world environment week by Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi and aims to increase awareness of the environmental, economic and social benefits of plastics as the material of choice for the 21st century.

'The Plastics Federation of South Africa, a section 21 company is the umbrella organisation for the plastics industry. We have partnered with The Enviromark Initiative, Buyisa-e-Bag and SABC Education's youth show Take 5 in implementing this competition as part of our dedicated education and awareness campaign to provide South Africans with a healthy, clean, pollution-free environment' says Executive Director of the Plastics Federation Bill Naudé.

The competition gives learners an opportunity to research plastics as part of a school project. The three essay topics are curriculum-based and form part of learning areas; language, physical sciences and economics. The prize giving event will coincide with a clean up campaign on Robben Island as part of the Plastics Federation of SA's contribution to International Coastal Clean Up Day on 17 September 2005 and National Cleanup Week from 12-18 September 2005.

Aaron says 'put pen to paper and stand a chance to win exciting prizes with plastic components, e.g. computers, sports equipment, bicycles, cameras, and cell phones, as well as study bursaries. Prizes will be awarded to winners and their schools at provincial and national level in each category. The closing date is 24 August 2004'.
