Innovation awardsEntries called for innovation awardsThe Innovation and Sustainability Awards were launched in June 2000 to celebrate the entrepreneurial and creative spirit of South African organisations as a means of adding sustainable value. The awards seek to raise awareness around sustainability and innovation in South Africa; encourage innovative excellence; recognize innovation in South Africa; promote pride in South African achievements; create role models; promote sharing of knowledge; and promote the importance of innovativeness and sustainability for the growth of the South African economy. Private and public sectors organisations, as well as NGOs, are invited to present written submissions that specify the nature of the particular innovation that they believe qualifies them to receive an Innovation Award. In the past, the awards have attracted entries from many fast-growth blue chips and established private corporations, including Telkom, KPMG Consulting, Sasol, Alcatel, MTN, the IQ Group and Discovery World. Grand Prix Winners in the private sector include Cida City Campus in 2002, joint winners Daimler Chrysler for their PPP HIV Aids Programme and TBM for their satellite marketing technology in 2003, and Intelleca for their voice recognition work in 2004. Categories in the private sector cover innovation in social, environmental, economic (technology and non-technology), innovation for women and most promising new innovation, with an overall Grand Prix Winner. In the public sector, through the CPSI Public Sector Innovation Awards -- a partner programme within the ISA awards -- the Innovator of the Year for 2003 was Naumi Mashalane. In 2004, it was the SA Police domestic violence response unit in Sunnyside, Pretoria. The public sector categories include innovative service delivery projects involving government in partnership with other African states; the innovative use of information technology for effective service delivery; innovative service delivery institutions; and innovative enhancements on internal systems in government.
