Text book Essay Competition

The Free High School Science Textbook (FHSST - www.fhsst.org ) project will offer prizes to the winners of a competition to write a short essay on real-world applications of scientific principles to be included in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics text books for Grades 10 to 12. Please advertise this as widely as possible.

Essays will be used to demonstrate the wide applicability of science and should be as diverse and creative as possible. The less obvious or mainstream the application the better. To provide a flavour for the diversity of topics that can be addressed, a few possible essay ideas are provided here. Detailed chapter descriptions and further essay ideas are available on the competition page on the FHSST website.

" A chef might write about acids and bases in cooking - how they are used in food preparation (chemistry)
" A sound engineer could discuss interference considerations when planning a concert (physics)
" A stockbroker might write about probability theory and how it's used to play the stock market (maths)

About FHSST

The FHSST project is a non-profit, volunteer organisation that aims to provide free science and mathematics textbooks for Grades 10-12 to all South African learners. Started in 2002 by young South African scientists, one of the primary aims of the project is to develop a complete set of high school science textbooks, FREE of authors', publishers' and editors' royalties in line with the new South African curriculum. This is accomplished through contributions by volunteers. Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics books are currently being worked on, with Computer Literacy and Biology in the pipe-lines.

The Free High School Science Texts project is a collaborative effort. It is centrally administered, managed and grown, but we need your help to make it a success. We realise that no single person has enough time to spend days and weeks writing a free textbook. What we propose is to combine many small contributions into a quality text.
