TWAS International Programme for Higher Education and
Research (IPHER) offers the following opportunities for scientists from
developing countries
TWAS's International Programme for Higher Education and Research (IPHER)
provides some 250 fellowships tenable in developing countries such as Brazil,
China and India for scientists from developing countries. Fellowships, which run
for various lengths of time, are available for postgraduate, postdoctoral and
advanced research. Brief details of each programme are provided below. For

Associateships for Advanced Research
TWAS Fellowships for Research and Advanced Training
TWAS provides travel support for scientists from developing countries to
carry out research at a research institution in another developing country.
Duration: 3-12 months Deadline for applications: 1 October each year
TWAS-UNESCO Associateship Scheme
TWAS and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO), in collaboration with a number of centres of excellence
in the South, enable competent researchers from the South to visit these centres
regularly. An associate is appointed for three years during which s/he can visit
a centre on two occasions for research collaboration. Over 100 research centres
in developing countries participate in the scheme.

CAS-TWAS Fellowships for Visiting Scholars in China
CAS* and TWAS offer fellowships to scientists from developing countries (other
than China) who wish to pursue advanced research in the natural sciences.
Duration: 1-3 months Deadline for applications: 31 August each year
Fellowships for Postdoctoral Research
CNPq-TWAS Fellowships for Postdoctoral Research in Brazil
CNPq* and TWAS offer fellowships to young scientists from developing countries
(other than Brazil) who hold a PhD and wish to carry out postdoctoral research
in natural sciences.
Duration: 6-12 months Deadline for applications: 31 August each year
CAS-TWAS Fellowships for Postdoctoral Research in China
CAS and TWAS offer fellowships to young scientists from developing countries
(other than China) who hold a PhD and wish to carry out postdoctoral research in
natural sciences.
Duration: 6-12 months Deadline for applications: 31 August each year
CSIR-TWAS Fellowships for Postdoctoral Research in India
CSIR* and TWAS offer fellowships to young scientists from developing countries
(other than India) who hold a PhD and wish to carry out postdoctoral research.
Duration: 12 months Deadline for applications: 1 June each year
DBT-TWAS Biotechnology Fellowships for Postdoctoral Research in India
DBT* and TWAS offer fellowships to young scientists from developing countries
(other than India) who wish to carry out postdoctoral research in biotechnology.
Duration: 12 months Deadline for applications: 31 August each year
Fellowships for Postgraduate Training
CNPq-TWAS Doctoral Fellowships in Brazil Leading to a PhD in Natural
Sciences
CNPq and TWAS offer fellowships for students from developing countries (other
than Brazil) who wish to earn a PhD in the natural sciences.
Duration: 4 years Deadline for applications: 31 August each year
CAS-TWAS Fellowships for Postgraduate Research in China
CAS and TWAS offer fellowships for students from developing countries (other
than China) who hold a master's degree and wish to undertake the final year of
their PhD research in the natural sciences.
Duration: 1 year Deadline for applications: 31 August each year
CSIR-TWAS Fellowships for Postgraduate Studies in India
CSIR and TWAS offer fellowships in for students from developing countries
(other than India) who wish to obtain a PhD.
Duration: 3 years Deadline for applications: 1 June each year
DBT-TWAS Biotechnology Fellowships for Postgraduate Studies in India
DBT and TWAS offer fellowships for students from developing countries (other
than India) who wish to carry out postgraduate research in biotechnology.
Duration: 3 years Deadline for applications: 31 August each year
S.N.Bose-TWAS Postgraduate Fellowships in Physical Sciences at the S.N.
Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences
S.N.Bose* and TWAS offer fellowships to students from developing countries
(other than India) who wish to pursue research leading towards a PhD in the
physical sciences.
Duration: 4-5 years Deadline for applications: 31 August each year
Details
TWAS covers the costs of travel (air ticket and visa fees) to and from the
host country while the partner organizations* provide a monthly stipend to cover
food and accommodation expenses. In the case of TWAS Fellowships for Research
and Advanced Training and appointments under the TWAS-UNESCO Associateship
Scheme, TWAS provides travel and a monthly contribution of US$300 toward
incidental local expenses. Host institutes are expected to offer local
hospitality.

Fellowships are tenable in Brazilian research institutions recognized by CAPES (Coordenação
de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior, www.capes.gov.br)
as among the best in the country.
CAS, Chinese Academy of Sciences (China): Fellowships are tenable in any one of
the CAS institutions.
CSIR, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (India): Fellowships are
tenable in any one of CSIR's institutions or laboratories.
DBT, Department of Biotechnology, Government of India (India): Fellowships are
tenable in any biotechnology institution or university department in India.
S.N.Bose, S.N.Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences (India): Fellowships are
only tenable at the S.N.Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata, India.
