'Karoo Veld' makes sense of science for Karoo farmersKarin Theron
A dream came true for a team of Karoo researchers when their book on their beloved Karoo Veld was recently published in Afrikaans and English. With this book, Proff. Karen Esler and Sue Milton who both lecture in the Department of Conservation Ecology, Faculty of AgriSciences, and co-author Dr. Richard Dean succeeded in translating science into a language that is palatable to Karoo farmers and land owners. The book was compiled to assist Karoo land users to apply ecologically friendly veld management and to evaluate the effects of grazing and restoration of the veld. The picture list in the back of the book of common Karoo plants with both their common and scientific names, makes it easy and enjoyable to identify plants. One section identifies invasive alien weeds according to clear photographs. The book also boasts a list of consultants working with Karoo Veld and some valuable information on South African legislation that is of relevance to Karoo land users.
Milton and Dean published a book, also called Karoo Veld, in 1996. This new edition is an update on the earlier edition that was published in English only, including the research of Esler. She did her doctoral thesis on the understanding of the structure and dynamics of Karoo vegetation. She is a specialist on the restoration of arid rangelands. According to Esler there was a dire need for a book like this in Afrikaans as most of the Karoo community is Afrikaans speaking. The book is published by Briza Publications and is also available from Kirstenbosch at R169. The authors are also having a series of small book launches throughout the Karoo. More information:
