Phd position available
For studies in food web ecology of coastal marine invertebrate communities

Research and bursary funding is available for a highly motivated PhD student in the field of marine ecology, to be based in the Richoux laboratory in the Zoology and Entomology Department at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa. Applicants must possess an M.Sc. degree in a related biological field (eg. zoology, botany, biochemistry, etc.) and have a keen interest in both field and laboratory-based research. The successful applicant will acquire or further develop skills in an exciting and widely applicable interdisciplinary field involving trophic marker analysis (fatty acid and stable isotope signatures) to study energy transfer within and among aquatic ecosystems.

All interested candidates, please email your CV (with 3 referees and their email contact details), transcripts, pdf copy of M.Sc. thesis (or a summary if not yet completed), and a letter of motivation as soon as possible to:

SARChI Research Chair in Marine Ecosystems
Rhodes University

Applications are invited from South African citizens for postgraduate bursaries for 2010/2011 at the MSc and PhD levels.

Bursaries are offered for postgraduate studies in the broad field of marine biology. Successful applicants will join a highly motivated and productive team of postgraduates and post doctoral researchers with strong interdisciplinary collaborative links. The group is multi-ethnic and multinational and, while the focus is on the south coast of South Africa, field work is carried out throughout the country and in the Southern Ocean. Present areas of research include phylogeography, biogeography, ecophysiology, community structuring and species interactions.

Bursary values are: MSc R40 000 pa
PhD R60 000 pa
Limited honours bursaries are available at R8 000

Applications will be competitive and evaluated primarily on the basis of academic excellence. However, evidence of dedication, a strong work ethic and serious commitment to research will be advantageous. Applications should include an academic transcript, the names and contact details of three referees and a brief letter of motivation.

Rhodes University

Post-doctoral opportunities - Coastal phylogeography, ecology & systematics

Researchers from the Molecular Ecology and Systematics Group (MESG) and the Coastal Research Group (CRG) at Rhodes University have recently made important advances in understanding genetic and ecological processes in marine organisms. This has been achieved using DNA sequencing technologies in conjunction with ecological experiments in the laboratory and the field.

In order to continue and expand this work, we are looking for two energetic people who have recently obtained their PhDs to undertake phylogeographic and ecological research on selected seaweeds and animals along the southern African coastline.

Among the skills required of the successful applicants are: a sound understanding of marine biology, DNA amplification and sequencing, DNA cloning, the ability to conduct a range of phylogenetic and phylogeographic analyses, and an understanding of ecological processes and theory. Possession of a valid driver's license and SCUBA diving skills would be advantageous.

The research will be supervised by Prof. C. D. McQuaid (CRG) and Prof. N.P. Barker (MESG). All molecular work will be conducted in the MESG lab in the Botany Department; facilities for ecological and ecophysiological studies are available in the Department of Zoology & Entomology

For additional information please contact Prof. Nigel Barker, Dept. Botany (n.barker@ru.ac.za  Phone: 046 603 8715) or Prof. Christopher McQuaid (c.mcquaid@ru.ac.za  Phone: 046 603 8535/8525).
