The Department of Mathematical Sciences is responsible for both teaching and research in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Computer Science at Stellenbosch University.

The Mathematics Division is keen to strengthen its research in analysis or in areas of mathematics where techniques from analysis are used, such as analytic number theory, analytic combinatorics and differential geometry. Although suitable candidates from these areas will have preference, exceptional candidates from other areas of Mathematics represented in the Mathematics Division may also be considered. Existing active research groups in the Mathematics Division include Algebra & Number Theory, Analysis & Topology and Discrete Mathematics. More information is available on our webpage.

Duties:
• Active research and publication;
• advising and supervising postgraduate students;
• teaching undergraduate and postgraduate Mathematics modules;
• participating in and enhancing the activities of one of the research groups in the Mathematics Division.

Requirements:
• PhD in Mathematics;
• a research interest in analysis or in an area of Mathematics where analysis techniques, such as analytic number theory, analytic combinatorics and differential geometry, are used;
• at least one year’s postdoctoral research experience;
• a growing track record of publications in internationally recognised Mathematics journals, as well as participation in local and international conferences;
• a record of successful postgraduate student supervision (for appointment as Senior Lecturer);
• ability to conduct independent research;
• a strong commitment to teaching and student supervision;
• ability to teach large undergraduate classes;
• sound communicative skills in Afrikaans and/or English.

Recommendations:
• Existing international research contacts;
• ability to design new undergraduate and postgraduate modules;
• willingness to learn Afrikaans and English should it be necessary.

Commencement of duties: 1 July 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter
