The Department of Physiological Sciences
awaits applications from candidates who can teach basic, applied and integrated
physiology effectively to students in the following undergraduate programmes:
BSc Human Life Sciences, BSc Sports Science, and Molecular and Cellular
Biotechnology; and to postgraduate students pursuing multidisciplinary
Physiological Sciences programmes within the Department.
Duties:
Teaching basic, applied and integrative Physiology at undergraduate and
postgraduate levels in the above programmes;
supervising postgraduate students;
participating in academic administration and relevant departmental outreach
activities;
further study and training to develop as competitive researcher.
Requirements:
MSc in Physiology or a related biological discipline (minimum requirement);
positive evaluations of effectiveness in the research process;
ability to teach and write effectively in English and/or Afrikaans.
Recommendations:
Evidence of research outputs;
potential to fulfill recommendations for Lecturer over time (see below).
Recommendations for Lecturer:
Potential to access research funding;
evidence of leadership qualities and independent initiative;
potential to establish own research group in the future;
experience in postgraduate supervision;
potential to teach at postgraduate level.

journals;
sound knowledge of basic, applied and integrative Physiology;
ability to teach these subjects at undergraduate level;
indications of the ability to form collaborative links and work in a research
team;
ability to teach and write effectively in English and/or Afrikaans.

Duties:
Preparing and presenting practical/tutorial sessions at undergraduate and
honours levels;
general management of two research laboratories, namely histology and
haematology;
maintaining consumable stock and equipment;
practical supervision of postgraduate students;
participating in a histology or haematology-centred research programme.
Requirements:
At least an MSc in Physiological Sciences or a related discipline, with
relevant work experience;
proven proficiency with histological techniques, including
immunohistochemistry and microscopy;
good oral and written communication skills;
computer literacy in MS Office 2010 (especially Word and Excel);
the ability to work independently;
previous experience with research assistance in various physiological models;
excellent organisational skills.
Recommendations:
Experience in primary sample collection for research purposes;
advanced microscopy techniques;
phlebotomy certification;
good people skills;
ability to communicate in Afrikaans.
